Social media giant Facebook has admitted that a bug in its anti-spam system has blocked a number of links to news stories about the coronavirus, at times marking them as spam.

On Twitter, Guy Rosen, Facebook Vice President responsible for Integrity, announced that Facebook has “restored all the posts that were incorrectly removed, which included posts on all topics – not just those related to COVID-19. This was an issue with an automated system that removes links to abusive websites, but incorrectly removed a lot of other posts too.”

The California-based company had previously announced that it would be taking a strong approach towards false claims and conspiracy theories about coronavirus. Earlier this week it joined other digital media organisations such as Google, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Twitter and Youtube committing to fighting fake news and fraud related to COVID19.
