Falklands dispute may last decades – Argentina president

Argentina’s President Javier Milei has acknowledges that the Falkland Islands are currently under UK control. In an interview with the BBC, the right-wing leader expressed his intention to pursue diplomatic means to reclaim the islands, acknowledging that there is no quick solution. This stance marks a departure from previous Argentine leaders who have consistently claimed sovereignty over the islands.

Milei said that achieving sovereignty could take decades and highlighted Argentina’s desire to avoid conflict in the process. He recently outlined a roadmap for the islands’ return to Argentina, coinciding with the 42nd anniversary of the Falklands War in April. He criticised past politicians for their empty rhetoric on the issue.

The Falklands, known as the Malvinas in Argentina, were at the center of a conflict between the UK and Argentina in 1982, resulting in significant loss of life.

Despite this history, President Milei praised Margaret Thatcher, the UK prime minister during the war, although he acknowledges the controversial actions taken during the conflict.
