Fernando Ricksen, former Netherlands’ footballer dies at 43 after battle with ALS

Fernando Ricksen has died aged 43 after a battle with motor neurone disease, his former club Rangers have announced.

A statement read: “Rangers is deeply saddened to announce that former player Fernando Ricksen passed away this morning following his battle with motor neurone disease.”

In January 2018 a statue was unveiled to highlight the achievements and struggles of the AZ, Glasgow Rangers and Zenit Sint-Petersburg player as he combatted a fatal form of the Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)

The Independent reports that the former Netherlands international won seven major trophies in his time at Ibrox, including two Premier League titles.
