Football’s world governing body, FIFA, has been warned that players are prepared to strike if overwork continues, the BBC reports.
Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) chief executive Maheta Molango believes players are at breaking point.
The PFA has been urging changes to the congested football calendar, particularly with the proposed expansion of the Club World Cup to 32 teams next summer.
“I recently visited a dressing room and told the players: ‘I can advocate for you, but it’s ultimately your decision. How far are you willing to go?'” Molango said during the PFA and global players’ union Fifpro’s end-of-season review of player workload and recovery.
“Some players responded: ‘I’m not having it, we might as well strike.’ Others said: ‘What’s the point? Yes, I’m a millionaire, but I don’t even have time to spend the money.’
“It’s not just the union saying this, but also managers like Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola. We’ve reached a stage where we can’t rule out any action.”
The PFA has threatened legal action and is exploring options to address the increasing number of games in the football calendar.
