Finland joins Swedish, French navies for submarine threat drills

The Finnish, French and Swedish navies will participate in joint anti-submarine threat countermeasure drills off of Sweden’s west coast, starting later this week.

Finland will take part in the Marex Spring 24 exercise with its Hamina-class missile vessel Pori, according to a Coastal Fleet press release issued on Monday afternoon. The drills, led by Sweden, will run from 13 to 20 March.

Two Finnish officers will also be deployed on Swedish corvettes during the drill, according to the release.

The Coastal Fleet said the Hamina-class missile boats were “top level by international standards” in countering subsurface threats. It noted that ships in the fleet received mid-life upgrades that included the installation of TP47 lightweight torpedoes and variable depth sonar systems.

“International exercises enhance the personnel’s know-how and international interoperability. Even if Finland does not have any submarines of its own, this kind of exercises provide Finland with an opportunity to conduct training with them,” the release stated.
