Football star Cristiano Ronaldo choose privacy over spectacle for Portugal wedding

Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez have announced that they are married, revealing that they held a private civil ceremony in Cascais, Portugal, on Aug. 11, 2026.

The couple shared the news directly through their social media accounts, avoiding media exclusives or public celebrations. The announcement consisted of a single photograph showing their intertwined hands with wedding rings visible, accompanied only by the initials “C” and “G.”

The understated post quickly attracted global attention, receiving more than 4 million likes within about 40 minutes.

According to confirmations from Ronaldo’s representatives and international media reports, the ceremony took place in Cascais, a coastal town west of Lisbon where the couple have established a family home.

The decision contrasted with months of speculation that the football star might stage a lavish wedding celebration in locations such as Madeira, his native island, or other international destinations. Instead, the couple reportedly chose a small weekday ceremony focused on family privacy.

Only their five children were present, highlighting their intention to keep the occasion limited to their immediate family circle.

The marriage marks the culmination of a relationship that began in 2016 in Madrid, when Rodríguez was working in a Gucci boutique and Ronaldo was already one of the world’s most famous footballers.

They made their first major public appearance together at the FIFA awards ceremony in January 2017. Since then, Rodríguez has accompanied Ronaldo through several significant career moves, including his transfer to Juventus in 2018, his return to Manchester United in 2021, and his move to Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia in 2023.

Rodríguez has also developed a substantial public profile of her own. Through modelling, business ventures and social media, she has become an influential international celebrity. Her life and career were featured in the Netflix docuseries I Am Georgina, which presented her as a model, entrepreneur, mother and public figure in her own right.

The couple have also faced personal tragedy together. In October 2021, they announced they were expecting twins. In April 2022, they revealed that their baby son had died during childbirth, while their daughter survived. The loss was widely described by the couple as a life-changing experience that strengthened their focus on family and the well-being of their children.

The wedding also carries symbolic significance because it comes exactly one year after their engagement announcement on Aug. 11, 2025, when Rodríguez shared a photograph of her engagement ring and wrote: “Yes, I do. In this and all my lives.”

By choosing a quiet civil ceremony and a minimal public announcement, Ronaldo and Rodríguez have taken an unusually restrained approach for two of the world’s most recognisable celebrities, allowing a simple image and two initials to convey the news of their marriage.
