Former Danish financial regulator charged in connection with money laundering scandal

The former chair of Denmark’s financial regulator who had previously been finance director of Danske Bank has been charged and his house raided in connection with a €200bn money laundering scandal.

Henrik Ramlau-Hansen was charged by Danish economic prosecutors and his house outside Copenhagen was raided, people familiar with the investigation said, confirming a report in Danish daily newspaper Borsen.

The people said he was charged with failure to prevent certain transactions at Danske where he was finance director from 2011 until 2015.

The prosecutors’ moves mark a significant escalation in the €200bn scandal, which has cost Danske half its market capitalisation, triggered the ousting of its chief executive and chairman, and sparked criminal investigations in Denmark, the US, France and Estonia.
