Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy to be released from prison

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is set to leave La Santé Prison in Paris on Monday after serving three weeks, following an appeals court’s approval of his request for release.

Sarkozy, 70, was imprisoned on October 21 after being found guilty of allowing aides to seek funding from Moammar Gadhafi’s regime for his 2007 presidential campaign.

He continues to deny any wrongdoing and has appealed the verdict. Prosecutors supported his release, citing his consistent cooperation with investigations and court appearances. The court has imposed strict conditions: Sarkozy must avoid contact with others involved in the trial, including Gaddafi’s son Saif, and may not speak with Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin or his team.

He is also prohibited from leaving France. Appearing via video at Monday’s hearing in the same attire he wore upon entering prison, Sarkozy called his time behind bars “a nightmare” and “grueling,” highlighting the personal toll of the experience.
