Former Spanish king Juan Carlos recovering from heart surgery

Former Spanish king Juan Carlos I, the father of Spain’s reigning King Felipe VI, is recovering in hospital after undergoing a triple coronary artery bypass.

Officials said he is making a satisfactory recovery at Quirónsalud Hospital in Madrid.

The heart surgery was scheduled after Juan Carlos underwent a check-up in June. The hospital’s managing director, Lucía Alonso, described the procedure as “a success.”

The 81-year-old former monarch retained the title of emeritus king after his abdication in 2014.
