France to create new space force

France will set up a new space defence command in September, President Emmanuel Macron has announced.

Speaking a day before the annual Bastille Day celebrations, Macron said that the command would help to “better protect our satellites, including in an active way”.

Speaking in front of a military audience at the French Defense ministry in Paris, the president added that the new command would eventually be part of his country’s air force.

The investment involved has yet to be determined.

Analysts say this marks a switch from a defensive to an offensive posture.

Macron’s proposal follows similar moves by the US, China and Russia in recent years.
