French investigators begin study of Ethiopian jet’s cockpit recorder

French investigators at the Bureau d’Enquetes et d’Analyses (BEA) – the French Aviation Investigation and Analysis Office – in Le Bourget, outside Paris, began studying the cockpit voice recorder of an Ethiopian Airways plane that crashed last week.

Downloading the data was expected to take four to five hours. The BEA also issued a photo showing the cockpit voice recorder dented but intact.

Ethiopian Airlines crash aftermath
A handout photo made available by the Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety (BEA) on 14 March 2019 shows the flight data recorder (FDR) from the Ethiopia Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft. The BEA received the flight data and cockpit voice recorders on 14 March 2019.

Once successfully recovered, the data should help provide answers to why the Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft hurtled into the ground minutes after take off last Sunday from Addis Ababa, killing 157 people.
