Fresco with two gladiators fighting discovered in Pompeii

A handout photo made available by the Italian Culture Ministry on 11 October 2019 shows two gladiators at the end of a fight, with one (L) winning and the other one succumbing, on the latest fresco found in Pompeii.

The wall painting reportedly was discovered in the construction area of the Regio V, as part of the work to secure and remodel the excavation fronts, foreseen by the Great Pompeii Project.

According to the project’s website, the EU-funded initiative includes the ‘consolidation and restoration of decorated surfaces’ as one of the main areas of intervention aimed at a ‘requalification of the archaeological site of Pompeii.’
