Hagia Sophia in Istanbul to become a mosque

Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that the Hagia Sophia museum in Istanbul will be controversially turned into a mosque.

The Hagia Sophia, known as Ayasofya in Turkey, in the past was a church and a mosque. In 1934 it was given secular status so that worshippers of all religions can enjoy the building.

But now Erdogan said that it had been a “very big mistake” to turn it into a museum.

Erdogan’s decision risks angering Greece, Turkey’s neighbour and historical adversary.

The Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras visited the Hagia Sophia after meeting with Erdogan last month to emphasise it’s status.
