Hezbollah says it shot down Israeli drone

epa03025221 An Israeli Air Force 'Heron' unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), or drone, flies over Palmachim Air Base, near Yavne, Israel, 05 December 2011, in a display for the media. The Israeli army invited journalists to view the drone at a time when various countries are showing concern over Iran's growing nuclear capabilities. The 'Heron' drone is 12 meters long with a 16 meter wingspan and can fly for more than 24 hours at an altitude of 30,000 feet. An Israeli Air Force major who briefed the journalists stressed that the drone could go 'where Israeli needed it to go,' but refused to elaborate further or give exact distances the craft was able to fly, but did say it could not be refuelled in flight. Hezbollah said on Monday that it had downed an “Israeli drone” as it flew over the border with Lebanon. The Islamist militant movement said that the unmanned aircraft was now in the hands of its fighters.

A statement from the Iran-backed group said that it had “confronted with necessary weapons an Israeli drone” as it entered southern Lebanon near the town of Ramyah.

The Israel Defence Forces confirmed that the drone was downed in southern Lebanon during routine activity, ruling out intelligence leak.

Several hours earlier, Syrian media outlets said that unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) struck Iran-back militias in eastern Syria.

The latest confrontation between the bitter enemies came a week after the fiercest exchange of fire since their 2006 month-long war.

Cross-border shelling erupted in response to a drone attack in a Hezbollah-controlled suburb of Beirut.
