Hunt announces joint European mission on the Strait of Hormuz

Jeremy Hunt, the Foreign Secretary, announced a joint European maritime mission on the Strait of Hormuz in the aftermath of a British tanker seizure in the Gulf.

In a statement to the House of Commons he said the UK will ask all British flagged ships to give notice of intention to pass through the Strait of Hormuz so they can be given protection.

It followed a signal from the United States that it would not aid Britain in the Persian Gulf, in a fresh sign of disagreement between the allies over Iran policy.

In fact, earier the US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, said that the  UK must be responsible for the safety of its own ships in the Gulf.

His remarks reflect unresolved tensions between Britain and the US over Donald Trump’s plans for a US-led military convoy to protect international shipping operating off the Iranian coast.

Speaking on Fox News, Pompeo said: “The responsibility in the first instance falls to the United Kingdom to take care of their ships. The US has a responsibility to do its part.”
