Hurricane Dorian regained strength late Wednesday, becoming a Category 3 storm as it moves slowly up the coast and closes in on the Carolinas.

On Wednesday, Dorian brought wind gusts and heavy rain to Florida, while in the Bahamas, parts of the nation of low-lying islands were in ruins.

Relief officials have reported scenes of utter ruin in parts of the Bahamas and rushed to deal with an unfolding humanitarian crisis in the wake of Hurricane Dorian.

The storm’s punishing winds, and muddy brown floodwaters destroyed or severely damaged thousands of homes, crippled hospitals, flooded airports and trapped people in attics.

At least 20 deaths were reported following the most powerful storm on record ever to hit the islands, with the full scope of the disaster still unknown.

Residents from Florida all the way up to Virginia are warned to listen to emergency advice as the category two hurricane slowly moves north.

Dorian is currently east of the state of Georgia moving north-northwest at about 13km/h, with maximum sustained winds of 177km/h.

The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned of a “life-threatening storm surge and dangerous winds” for the coasts of Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, and Virginia, all the way up to Chesapeake Bay.

North Carolina and South Carolina were bracing for a direct hit. Dorian could still potentially make landfall Thursday or Friday.
