IOC to Restrict Women’s Olympic Category to Biological Females from 2028

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that participation in the women’s category at Olympic events will be limited to biological females starting from 2028.

Under the new policy, eligibility will be determined through a “once-in-a-lifetime” sex verification test. This measure will exclude transgender women and athletes with differences in sexual development (DSD) who have undergone male puberty from competing in women’s events.

The rules are set to come into force at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

IOC President Kirsty Coventry stated that the decision was guided by medical expertise and aims to ensure fairness in competition. She emphasized that even the smallest physical advantages can have a significant impact at the elite Olympic level.
