The 11th parliamentary election and the mid-term election for the Assembly of Experts began in Iran on Friday morning.
Anyone who is interested in national interests should take part in the election, the Leader said on Friday after casting his vote for the parliamentary and the mid-term election for the Assembly of Experts elections.
Iranian News Agency IRNA reports that “voters are to elect 290 lawmakers and seven members of the Assembly of Experts by their ballot papers.”
The parliamentary election is being held nationwide while the mid-term Assembly of Experts election takes place in five provinces of Tehran, Qom, North Khorasan, Khorasan Razavi and Fars. Based on a report from Tehran election headquarters, over nine million people are eligible to vote in today’s elections in the Iranian capital.
Overall, more than 57 million people from across Iran are eligible to vote.
The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has stressed on Tuesday that during the upcoming elections, like the previous instances of the anniversary of the Revolution and the commemoration of Lt General Qasem Soleimani, the enemy will fail once again in disappointing Iranian youth.
“Voting is a religious duty…which will also guarantee the national interests of Iran,” Khamenei said after he voted, broadcast live on state TV.
“I am urging Iranians to vote early.”
With Iran facing growing isolation on the global stage and discontent at home over economic hardships, analysts have said the turnout will amount to a referendum on the leaders’ handling of political and economic crises.
