Iranian president begins ‘historic’ visit to Iraq

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani arrived on Monday in Iraq’s capital Baghdad, marking his first visit to the neighbouring country since he took office in 2013.

Rouhani’s visit is important for Iran in both political and economic terms.

The three-day visit is aimed at bolstering ties between Shiite Iran and Shiite-majority Iraq and comes as the United States seeks to rally regional support for its anti-Iran campaign.
