Ireland to hold snap general election on February 8

Ireland will hold a snap general election next month, the country’s Prime Minister Leo Varadkar told his cabinet Tuesday morning.

Irish media reported that the vote will be held on Saturday, February 8. Varadkar is expected to ask the Irish president to dissolve parliament later on Tuesday.

A notice from the Áras on Tuesday said: “An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar TD, will visit Áras an Uachtaráin this afternoon, January 14th, 2020, to ask President Michael D. Higgins to dissolve the 32nd Dáil and to summon the new Dáil on 20th February 2020.”
