Israel military says intercepted two projectiles fired from Yemen

The Israeli military announced on Tuesday that it intercepted a missile and another projectile launched from Yemen, where the Houthis have frequently carried out attacks they claim are in retaliation for Israel’s offensive in Gaza.

“Following sirens that sounded recently in several parts of Israel, a missile fired from Yemen was intercepted,” the Israeli military stated on Telegram.

In a separate update, the military said the air force intercepted another projectile, but no sirens were triggered.

Since the Gaza conflict began in October 2023 after Hamas’s attack on Israel, the Houthis have repeatedly launched missiles and drones toward Israel.

Claiming solidarity with the Palestinians, the Houthis paused their attacks during a two-month Gaza ceasefire that ended in March but resumed once Israel renewed its operations in the region.

Although most projectiles have been successfully intercepted, a missile launched by the Houthis in early May struck near the perimeter of Ben Gurion International Airport close to Tel Aviv for the first time.

In response to these attacks, Israel has conducted several strikes in Yemen in recent months, targeting locations including ports and the airport in Sanaa.

Israel reported downing a missile from Yemen on Sunday and two more on Thursday.

The Houthis claimed responsibility for attacks targeting Ben Gurion Airport on both days.
