Israeli military targets Hamas leader office in Gaza

UPDATE: An Israeli air strike targeted the office of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in the Gaza Strip on Monday, Hamas radio reported. Haniyeh was unlikely to have been in the office, as Hamas routinely evacuates its buildings when expecting Israeli attacks. An Israeli military spokesman declined to comment on the report.

The Israeli military began striking targets in the Gaza Strip on Monday evening, hours after a long-range rocket struck a house in central Israel, wounding seven people.

The military said that Israeli forces “started striking Hamas targets throughout the Gaza Strip.” Initial reports are indicating  explosions west of Gaza City.

The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to cut short a trip to the US on Monday following the rocket strike and had vowed to “respond forcefully”. The army said later it was reinforcing troops along the Gaza frontier and calling up reserves.

So far no militant group has said it fired the rocket. One unnamed Hamas official said it had “no interest” in doing so.
