Israel’s security cabinet is set to vote on Thursday regarding its response to Iran’s ballistic missile attack, according to an Israeli official speaking to CNN. Earlier, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated that the retaliation would be “powerful, precise, and above all – surprising.”
Earlier this week, Iran launched dozens of missiles toward Israel, describing it as a a response to the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, among others.
The White House has not disclosed details about Israel’s planned response to Iran, following a “direct” 30-minute phone call between President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — their first conversation in several weeks.
As tensions rise in the region, the UN reported that a quarter of Lebanon is now under Israeli military displacement orders due to the ongoing conflict with Iran-backed Hezbollah. Since Israel intensified airstrikes and launched a ground incursion this month, more than 1,500 people have been killed, and 1.2 million have been displaced in Lebanon.
Meanwhile, the US envoy to the UN emphasized the urgent need for Israel to address the “catastrophic conditions” in Gaza, warning that “actions by the Israeli government to limit the delivery of aid” would only exacerbate the suffering.
