Italian air transport facing ‘unprecedented’ crisis

Alitalia is to receive a cash injection of at least 100 million euros (135 million dollars), the board of the loss-making Italian air carrier said on 26 September 2013, amid speculation of a takeover from minority shareholder Air France-KLM. The Italian air transport sector is in an “unprecedented” crisis with travellers down 85% to two million in March and down 31.8% to 25.6 million in the first quarter, Assaeroporti said Thursday.

There was a loss of almost 12 million units compared to last March, the association said.

“We have never seen a crisis like it,” it said.
