Italy crash out as Sweden and Turkey seal World Cup spots in dramatic play-offs

Italy’s failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup dominated a dramatic night of European play-off finals, as four nations booked their place at the tournament.

Italy were beaten by Bosnia and Herzegovina after a 1-1 draw, losing 4-1 on penalties. Moise Kean gave Italy an early lead, but Haris Tabaković equalised late on before Esmir Bajraktarević converted the decisive spot-kick.

Elsewhere, Sweden secured qualification with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Poland. Anthony Elanga opened the scoring before Nicola Zalewski equalised. Gustaf Lagerbielke restored Sweden’s lead, Karol Świderski struck back, and Viktor Gyökeres sealed the win with a late goal.

Turkey also booked their place with a narrow 1-0 win over Kosovo, thanks to a second-half strike from Kerem Aktürkoğlu.

In Prague, Czech Republic overcame Denmark after a 2-2 draw, winning 3-1 on penalties. Pavel Šulc and Ladislav Krejčí scored for the hosts, while Andreas Høgh netted a late equaliser before Michal Sadílek converted the decisive penalty.
