“I will be the defence lawyer of the Italians” – Giuseppe Conte accepts official mandate to form government

The President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella gave Professor Giuseppe Conte the task of forming the new Italian government. The decision was announced by the secretary general of the Quirinale Ugo Zampetti.

“The President of the Republic has given me the task that I accepted with reserve, if I succeed in carrying out the task, I will present to the Chambers a program based on agreements between the majority political forces”, the appointed Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said to journalists at the Quirinale after the meeting with Mattarella.

Conte added that “the contract on which this experience is based fully represents the Italians’ expectations of change, and I will place them as the foundation of the government experience in full respect of the prerogatives of the President of the Republic and the Constitution. I want to give life to a government on the side of citizens”.

Addressing the Italians for the first time, after given the mandate, Conte said that he will be the defence lawyer of the Italians”. He confirmed the European and international position of the country, focusing on “the interests of Italy” and announced that he will move in the wake of the contract M5s-League for “the government of change”.
