Italy on alert after West Nile Virus Death Reported in Lazio

Health authorities in Italy’s Lazio region have reported the first death of the year linked to the West Nile virus, marking a renewed public health concern as mosquito-borne illnesses rise during the summer months.

The fatality, confirmed by regional health officials on Saturday, occurred in a patient with pre-existing chronic conditions. The individual had been hospitalized in recent days in serious condition after testing positive for the virus. No further details about the victim have been released in accordance with privacy guidelines.

This marks the first confirmed case of West Nile virus infection in Lazio in 2025, as well as the first virus-related death in the region this year. The case was promptly reported to the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), Italy’s national public health institute, and entered into the national surveillance system.

Local authorities have launched mosquito control efforts in the area where the infection is believed to have occurred. As per protocol, environmental disinfestation and increased vector monitoring have been initiated to reduce the risk of further transmission.

West Nile virus is typically spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes, primarily the Culex species. Most individuals infected do not develop symptoms, but in vulnerable populations—particularly the elderly or those with compromised immune systems—the virus can lead to severe neurological complications or death.

Health officials continue to urge residents to take preventive measures, including using insect repellent, avoiding outdoor activities at dusk and dawn, and eliminating standing water near homes.

The Lazio Regional Health Department has emphasized that the current risk to the general population remains low, but it will continue close monitoring and collaboration with national health bodies.
