Italy seized €2 billion in Russian oligarch assets

Italy has seized assets worth around €2 billion from Russian oligarchs under sanctions imposed following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the country’s financial police (Guardia di Finanza) said on Tuesday.

In a report marking the force’s 252nd anniversary, the Guardia di Finanza said the confiscated assets include real estate, luxury vehicles, yachts, artworks and shareholdings in companies.

The report also highlighted the force’s broader enforcement activities between January 2025 and May 2026. During the 17-month period, investigators uncovered fraud involving more than €1.6 billion in Italian and European Union funding.

Authorities also seized assets worth €4.7 billion believed to be linked to tax evasion and tax fraud.

According to the report, the Guardia di Finanza identified 8,297 total tax evaders—individuals who failed to declare any of their income—and uncovered 47,419 cases of undeclared or otherwise illegal employment.

The force added that 20,429 people were reported to prosecutors for alleged tax-related offences during the same period.
