Italy’s Federcarrozzieri says scorching temperatures can severely damage cars and onboard electronics

Extreme heat can become a serious threat to automobiles, with potential damage to multiple vehicle components reaching as much as 16,400 euros ($18,000) per car, according to Federcarrozzieri, the Italian association representing auto body repair shops.
The group said prolonged high temperatures affect tires first. During periods of intense heat, road surfaces can exceed 60 degrees Celsius (140 F), accelerating tread wear, reducing grip and increasing the risk of tire blowouts as air pressure rises with heat expansion. Replacing a tire typically costs 50 to 150 euros, including labor, Federcarrozzieri said.
Batteries are also vulnerable because high temperatures speed up self-discharge and reduce efficiency through the evaporation of internal fluids. Replacing a car battery generally costs 100 to 250 euros, including installation.
Federcarrozzieri warned that engines face increased risks of overheating when exposed to high ambient temperatures. Reduced cooling-system efficiency and lower lubricating-oil viscosity can increase thermo-mechanical stress, causing expansion and deformation of metal components. In severe cases, this can lead to head-gasket failure or engine seizure, forcing the vehicle to stop. Engine rebuilding costs can range from 2,500 to 8,000 euros, depending on the vehicle model and the extent of the repair.
The association said cabin temperatures can approach 70 C (158 F) in extreme conditions. Such heat can cause cracking of dashboard plastics, fading and premature aging of seat fabrics and interior trim, and the release of volatile organic compounds from synthetic materials. High temperatures may also affect onboard electronics, including digital displays and other heat-sensitive components. Interior repairs can cost 200 to 4,000 euros, depending on the damage.
Exterior surfaces are also at risk. Prolonged exposure to heat and ultraviolet radiation can cause paint to lose its gloss, become dull and develop micro-cracks in the clear coat. Plastic headlights may yellow and lose transparency. Organic residues such as tree resin and bird droppings become more chemically aggressive when exposed to strong heat and sunlight, accelerating deterioration of the bodywork’s protective coating.
Repainting a single body panel, such as a door or bumper, generally costs 150 to 600 euros, while a full repaint can range from 1,300 to 4,000 euros, Federcarrozzieri said.
Association president Davide Galli urged motorists to take preventive measures, including checking tire pressure when tires are cold, inspecting tread condition, monitoring oil and coolant levels, using thermal covers to protect batteries from excessive heat, and using sunshades or curtains to protect vehicle interiors while avoiding parking in direct sunlight whenever possible.
