Italy’s PD elects Zingaretti as new leader

Nicola Zingaretti (photo above)  is the new leader of Italy’s centre-left Democratic Party (PD) after winning over 70% of the vote in an election on Sunday.

More than 1.6 million party supporters cast their ballots across Italy throughout Sunday.

ANSA reports that amongst the first to congratulate Zingaretti, the president of Italy’s Lazio region, was former prime minister and PD leader Matteo Renzi, whose confrontational style caused the party to lose supporters. Zingaretti is regarded as a moderate left winger capable of uniting the party,

Zingaretti’s convincing win avoided a run-off. The other two main candidates contesting the PD party leadership were Maurizio Martina, the party’s former caretaker leader, and Roberto Giachetti.

Zingaretti’s brother Luca plays the title role in the TV series Inspector Montalbano, has led Lazio since 2013.
