June’s Full Moon as seen from Malta

There was something special about the way it looked last night.

It was the June’s Full Moon.

Photographer Michael Galea took this photo of the moon. The close up photo shows the Tycho crater which appears prominently in the southern lunar hemisphere and was named after the great Danish mathematician and astronomer Tycho Brahe. One can easily make out the bright deposits radiating in every direction from the crater caused when impact occurred. This crater is about 85 kilometers across and 4 kilometers deep.

June’s Full Moon is named after the wild strawberries that start to ripen during this month. According to some sources, a European name for this early summer month was Rose Moon, and another was Hot Moon, for the beginning of the summer heat. Other sources quote Mead Moon as the Anglo-Saxon name because this was the time for mowing the meads, or meadows.
