Kidnapping charges in SeaWatch standoff

epa07333121 The Sea-Watch 3 search-and-rescue ship with 47 asylum seekers on board enters the port of Catania, Italy, 31 January 2019. The asylum seekers, including 15 unaccompanied minors, are set to finally disembark 13 days after being rescued in the Mediterranean by the ship operated by a German NGO and flying the Dutch flag. Rome prosecutors have come to the conclusion that there are elements to proceed with kidnapping charges in the case of the SeaWatch 3 migrant rescue ship

The ship had to wait 12 days off Siracusa in Sicily before getting the go ahead to land at Catania on January 31.

For the moment, the prosecutors presented their case file, against person or persons unknown, to Siracusa colleagues who will now weigh whether to hand the case to the Catania tribunal.

The Senate recently voted not to let kidnapping charges proceed against Interior Minister Matteo Salvini in another migrant rescue standoff last August.

In that case, Salvini kept 177 migrants on board coast guard ship Diciotti for two weeks until Albania, Ireland and the Italian Church agreed to take them.
