A Vietnamese woman suspected of killing Kim Jong Un’s estranged half brother has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and asked for leniency.
Doan Thi Huong, 30, is the only suspect on trial in Malaysia accused of the murder of Kim Jong Nam with VX poison, a lethal chemical weapon, at Kuala Lumpur airport in February 2017.
Her lawyer Salim Bashir said that the new charge was for causing injury with a dangerous weapon, which carries a maximum of 10 years in jail if convicted.
The previous charge was murder, which carries a death penalty. There is a possibbility that Doan may be freed soon, after her Indonesian co-accused was released last month.
Both women had always denied murder, saying they were tricked by North Korean spies into carrying out the assassination that shocked the world, and believed it was a prank for a reality TV show.
