Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the inauguration of the Turkish-German University campus in Istanbul on Friday, and said the “chaos in Libya will hit the entire Mediterranean if peace isn’t reached as soon as possible”.
“The peace plan is an important step for political stability in Libya,” Erdogan said.
“But its success goes through applying the decisions made at the Berlin Conference,” he said, adding that he hopes “the international community doesn’t repeat the mistakes made in Syria”.
Erdogan said Ankara is ready to “strongly support any peace initiative” to put an end to “a conflict that has caused more than 2,400 deaths and 7,500 wounded”.
“If we don’t want militants from terrorist organisations such as Daesh (ISIS) and al-Qaeda to establish themselves in Libya, we must speed up the process that brings a political solution,” Erdogan said.
