Lockdown causes Marmite shortage

 

Marmite was forced to temporarily stop producing large jars of spread because pub closures have resulted in a scarcity of brewers yeast.

The famously polarising snack, which has used the slogan “you either love it or hate it”, is made from the excess yeast which is left over when beer is brewed.

But with pubs forced to close because of the coronavirus lockdown, many brewers halted production.

A spokesman for Unilever, Marmite’s parent company, said it has now restarted normal production and that the full range of jars should be back on the shelves “very shortly”.
