UPDATED: Magnitude 6.1 quake in Indonesia, warns of aftershocks, tsunami potential in Mollucas Islands

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit near Indonesia’s Mollucas islands on Wednesday, Indonesia’s geophysics agency BMKG said.

The quake, which struck at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), had no potential to trigger a tsunami, the agency said.

Indonesia’s geophysics agency BMKG warned on Wednesday of possible aftershocks and tsunami potential in Seram Island that could be triggered by underwater landslides after the 6.1 quake near the Mollucas islands.

“Please move away from beach and move to higher ground,” BMKG said in a text message.
