Malta: Air Malta makes 69 pilots redundant after talks with ALPA failed

Air Malta laid off 69 pilots after it declared in a statement that talks with pilots’ union, ALPA, failed. The national airline stated that the talks were aimed at avoiding discharges, while at the same time safeguarding the sustainability and viability of the company.

On his part, the Minister responsible for Air Malta, Silvio Schembri said that after the pilots’ union insisted on the €73-million early retirement scheme, an average of €700,000 for every pilot, the airline had no other choice but to proceed with the redundancy of 69 of its pilots.
