Malta has third largest number of cars per inhabitants – Eurostat

Malta had the third largest amount of cars per 1000 inhabitants in recent years, according to a Eurostat report.

The country was one of five which had over 600 cars for every 1000 citizens.

In 2017, there were over 600 cars per 1,000 inhabitants in Luxembourg (670), Finland (617), Malta (613) and Cyprus (609).

On the other hand, there were less than 400 in Hungary (355), Latvia (356), Croatia (389) and Bulgaria (393).

Differences between member states in the number of cars registered was not only observed in terms of the amount of vehicles per inhabitants. There were als0 stark differences in the age of the cars bought.

In 2017, among the member states for which this data is available, the share of cars less than 2 years old was highest in Denmark (24 per cent of all cars), Belgium (22 per cent) and Sweden (20 per cent). On the other hand, in Lithuania (83 per cent), Latvia (77 per cent), Poland (74 per cent), Estonia and Hungary (both 70 per cent) cars were more than 10 years old, Eurostat said.

The report on statistics and mobility in Europe, published earlier this month, sheds light on the transport used by people across the EU.

“People in today’s Europe are on the move much more than ever before,” the report noted. “This mobility can be viewed from many angles, as there are many reasons for moving: migration, education, work or tourism,” it said.

According to the report, in 2016, 82.6 per cent of Maltese people used their cars, whereas 17.4 per cent of people used other forms of transportation.

There are plans for Malta to move towards using electric cars.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has said that a special tariff would be given to those who buy electric cars and charge them at their house.

Dr Muscat said the government was in talks with Enemalta to enrol a pilot project offering special tariffs to those charging their cars at home.
