Morning Briefing

Labour secures historic fourth consecutive election victory

The Labour Party has secured a record fourth consecutive general election victory. Prime Minister Robert Abela is set to remain in office after Labour obtained 51.8% of the vote, while the Nationalist Party secured 44.7%. Labour’s lead over the PN amounted to 21,721 votes, a smaller margin than the 39,474-vote advantage recorded in the 2022 election. The party’s parliamentary majority is likewise expected to narrow, dropping from nine seats to five. Meanwhile, smaller parties are projected to have gathered approximately 10,800 first-count votes collectively. Opposition leader Alex Borg acknowledged the defeat shortly after early results began emerging, but stressed that the Nationalist Party had managed to reduce the gap significantly compared to the previous election. Official figures released by Malta’s Electoral Commission late on Saturday showed voter turnout reached an estimated 87.42%, marking a rise compared to the previous general election and underlining strong electoral participation across the country. Social partners call for dialogue and stability following election result

Several major social partners and organisations congratulated the Labour Party following its general election victory, while stressing the importance of continued dialogue, stability, and sustainable growth. The Malta Chamber reaffirmed its commitment to social dialogue and pledged to continue working towards improving the business environment through higher standards, quality, and excellence across sectors. The General Workers’ Union said it would remain actively committed to advocating for decent work, better wages, fair working conditions, and improved quality of life, while continuing to protect workers and families. Meanwhile, the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association described the result as a strong mandate for government to address key national challenges and honour commitments made during the campaign. The MHRA stressed the importance of competitiveness, sustainable growth, investment, innovation, and skills development, while calling for effective cooperation between government and social partners. Forum Unions Maltin also expressed hope that the government would continue protecting the interests of workers and families during the new legislature. (Newsbook)
