Opposition Calls for Parliamentary Discussion on Hospitals Arbitration Ruling
Opposition Leader Alex Borg has announced that the Nationalist Party will request a parliamentary debate on the International Chamber of Commerce’s ruling concerning the hospitals concession arbitration. Borg said the ruling confirmed that the Maltese public gained nothing from the agreement and criticised the government for misrepresenting the outcome. He noted that while Malta sought to recover €488 million from Steward Health Care, it will instead have to pay an additional €5 million. The Opposition maintains that the government must be transparent about the ruling’s implications and accept responsibility for the contract’s failures. (Maltatoday)
Pre-departure Course to Become Mandatory for Foreign Workers
From next year, all third-country nationals seeking employment in Malta will need to complete a pre-departure course and pass a test on Maltese life and culture before moving to the islands. Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri said the initiative aims to help newcomers integrate better into society and understand their rights and responsibilities. The course will cover topics such as workers’ rights, local culture, basic hygiene, waste management, and simple Maltese phrases. Foreign workers already residing in Malta will also be able to take a similar course, with those who pass eligible for two-year work permits instead of one. (Times of Malta)
