Updated Land Use Rules Allow Some Non-Agricultural Activity The government has revised regulations to discourage land abandonment, now allowing agricultural land to be used for non-agricultural purposes, provided the activity does not interfere with farming or cause environmental harm. The updated guidelines, published on 28 July, also introduce exemptions for farmers or valid title holders who cannot register their land or carry out minimum agricultural activity. A judicial review mechanism has been added for those wishing to contest decisions by the director of agriculture. While some landowners raised concerns about private property rights, agricultural groups welcomed the changes as a step towards maintaining active land use. (The Malta Independent)
Government Considers Stronger Road Safety Enforcement Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela has confirmed that the government is considering stronger road safety enforcement following a deadly week on Malta’s roads. The matter is being discussed across the Health, Home Affairs, and Justice Ministries. Abela said speeding and driving under the influence remain key causes of serious accidents, noting that reckless driving on Malta’s narrow roads creates needless tragedies. He urged people not to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, stressing that road safety is a shared responsibility and a year-round concern. Meanwhile, at least three major incidents on the road occured on Monday, with a number of injuries reported. (Maltatoday)
