Ħamrun brawl: defence lawyers say brothers reacted to provocation

Two brothers accused of assaulting police officers in Ħamrun were provoked, defence lawyers argued in court on Monday. Representing Kurt and Elton Borg, the lawyers claimed that the officers mocked and swore at them, despite the brothers addressing them respectfully. Footage from a bodycam showed an officer sarcastically telling Kurt Borg, “Bloody hell, you’re such a good lawyer.” The officer, whose testimony was interrupted due to feeling unwell, admitted the remark may have “slipped out” but said it was provoked by the brothers’ actions. Government inaugurates new authority for climate action

The Climate Action Authority (CAA) was officially inaugurated on Monday morning, marking the first of its kind in Europe. This new authority is tasked with coordinating and overseeing the country’s climate change measures and regulations. Speaking at the launch event, Prime Minister Robert Abela described the occasion as “committing to environmental justice” and highlighted that the establishment of the CAA serves the common good, both for the present and future generations. Environment Minister Miriam Dalli emphasized that the fight against climate change transcends political divisions, noting that the creation and launch of the Climate Action Authority is an independent, non-partisan initiative. Malta to refuse harbour to Israel-bound ship

Transport Malta has confirmed that all service requests from a vessel bound for Israel and carrying weapons are being rejected. Earlier on Monday, a UN special rapporteur on Palestine urged Malta to prevent the ship from entering its waters. Francesca Albanese, in a post on X, stated that the Madeira-flagged vessel, Kathrin, has either arrived in Malta or is expected to do so soon. She called on the Maltese government, which has consistently taken a principled stand on Palestine, to intervene and halt the vessel’s progress. (The Malta Independent)
