Maksar gang jailed for life for Caruana Galizia, Chircop murders
Four men – Robert Agius, Adrian Agius, George Degiorgio, and Jamie Vella – have been sentenced to life in prison for their involvement in the murders of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia and lawyer Carmel Chircop. The court found that both murders were premeditated, and the judge considered the impact on society and the victims’ families. The defence argued for lesser sentences, citing factors such as the accused’s character and lack of prior convictions. However, the judge delivered the maximum punishment, stating it was a “strong verdict.” (Times of Malta)
Goverment initiates legal proceedings against MIDI
The government has initiated legal proceedings against the MIDI consortium over the Manoel Island concession, citing breaches of the 99-year emphyteusis agreement. The consortium failed to substantially complete the development by the deadline of March 31, 2023, triggering penalties and potential rescission of the concession. The government seeks to defend the people’s position and intends to exercise its rights, including rescinding the concession, due to the consortium’s inability to meet contractual obligations. The State demands payment of penalties with interest and reserves the right to impose further penalties. (The Malta Independent)
PM does not rule out early election
Prime Minister Robert Abela has repeatedly refused to rule out calling a general election during the Nationalist Party’s leadership race or shortly after a new leader is elected. “The timing of a general election is dictated by the national interest,” Abela said. “It is my prerogative to decide what is in the national interest. I believe I have always done that.” Speaking to journalists following Bernard Grech’s decision to resign as PN leader, Abela thanked him for his work and noted they shared a cordial relationship over the past five years. “There were moments when we disagreed — that is understandable, as we sit on opposite sides of parliament,” he said. “But from my side, and I believe from his, there was always mutual respect.” (Times of Malta)
