Influential persons should weigh words not to damage administration of justice – Chief Justice
Chief Justice Mark Chetcuti stressed that individuals with public or social influence must carefully consider their actions and words to avoid undermining the justice system. In his speech at the opening of the forensic year, he emphasised that this is essential for the judiciary to perform its duties calmly and for the public to retain trust in the legal system. He added that this is not optional but a responsibility for those who promote the common good and strengthen democracy and the rule of law. Public authorities, in particular, must clearly respect and support the Court’s rulings, ensuring they are not obstructed, challenged, or disregarded. (The Malta Independent)

PN calls for more manpower in law courts
The Nationalist Party has called on the government to increase manpower and improve infrastructure at the law courts. Shadow justice minister Karol Aquilina highlighted that delays remain the biggest issue, making reforms like the re-establishment of the Commercial Court ineffective without adequate resources. He cited official figures showing heavy backlogs, including over 8,000 criminal cases for one magistrate and significant caseloads in both the criminal and civil sectors, with some judges facing over 500 pending cases.
