Morning Briefing

Labour’s first proposals centre on families and first-time buyers
Labour has launched its 2026 election campaign with a package of early proposals aimed at first-time property buyers and young families. Measures announced include interest-free loans covering up to 25% of a property’s value, alongside expanded maternity, paternity and parental leave entitlements. The party said the proposals are designed to support household formation and ease financial pressures on younger voters entering the housing market. Ministers also signalled further announcements in areas such as artificial intelligence, digitalisation and foreign investment in the coming days. Economy Minister Silvio Schembri reiterated claims about a major foreign direct investment in the MedTech sector, promising further details shortly, while also highlighting upcoming renewable energy projects. Labour framed the opening day of the campaign around economic growth, family policy and long-term investment. (Times of Malta)

PN calls for economic reset and better quality of life

Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg has pledged an economic reset and a renewed approach to governance centred on quality of life, economic sustainability and public trust, following the Prime Minister’s announcement of a snap general election. Speaking at a press conference, Borg said the party’s campaign is not driven by branding but by what he described as a clear public mood. He said the slogan “Nifs Ġdid” reflects a widespread desire for a reset in priorities while preserving areas that are working well. He argued that Malta needs a balance between continuity and change, maintaining progress in successful sectors while addressing shortcomings where necessary. Borg pointed to public frustration over traffic congestion, rising living costs and the pace of development, questioning whether economic growth is being matched by improvements in daily life. ADPD, Momentum launch electoral campaign

ADPD – The Green Party and Momentum have both launched their electoral campaigns, each placing strong emphasis on reform, sustainability and a shift in political priorities ahead of the general election. ADPD launched its message under the theme “Ilkoll”, calling for policies rooted in social justice, fair distribution of wealth, sustainable planning and stronger democratic participation. The party said its campaign will continue to highlight the importance of community, cooperation, ecology and long-term sustainability, arguing for a more inclusive approach to national decision-making. Momentum, meanwhile, launched its campaign under the slogan “Real Change (Bidla Ta’ Vera)”. It said its platform is focused on issues affecting everyday life, including overdevelopment, rising living costs and what it described as a political culture where access often outweighs accountability. The party argued that voters are repeatedly exposed to slogans and promises, insisting that genuine change requires more than surface-level reforms. It said its vision reflects a growing demand for a fairer, more sustainable and liveable Malta for current and future generations. (TVM)
