Malta’s Editor Viewpoints +

The property market remains on top of the editorial agenda this Friday. Today’s Editorial selection also features a one-off editorial stint by the Archbishop of Malta, Charles J Scicluna.

The Times of Malta’s Editor has yesterday passed on his chair to Archbishop Charles J Scicluna, who has also penned today’s leading op-ed, titled “More homes, fewer buildings”. In his piece, His Grace argues that the construction industry should be at the service of the sustainable development of our islands and the quality of our life. He describes theuntimely death of Miriam Pace as a sad reminder of the high price we will pay if the only motive behind the construction industry is money. The Editor-for-a-day ends his editorial by expressing his hope that this tragedy will serve as a call for society to wake up and react.

The Independent tackles a different scourge that seems to define our society, following up on NSO data showing that 25% of Maltese are obese, exceeding by 10% the EU average. The Editor says this should be a wake-up call that our eating habits should change, as this lessens the quality of life and calls on everyone to make an effort to not only look good, but also feel good.

In-Nazzjon calls for political responsibility for the tragedy which dominated this week’s news. The Editor describes the supposed reforms announced last year as laughable, especially since they were not supported with adequate resources to ensure enforcement.

L-Orizzont also deals with the property market, but focuses on the rental market. It welcomes the recent stabilization of prices and the recent registration of over 3,600 rental properties. The Editor calls on the authorities to remain vigilant to fight abuse and to close off any loopholes which are identified.
