Malta’s Newspaper Review – 24th May, 2018

The Malta Independent, In-Nazzjon, L-Orizzont, and The Times lead with the story related to a bomb which exploded yesterday in Gharghur. In this explosion a man Kevin Ellul (43), who happens to be known to the police, suffered serious injuries. The Independent reports that the bomb was triggered soon after Ellul walked into the room. The explosion happened around 3pm in a room in a field in Gharghur.

The Times lead story <<Daphne’s laptop given to German federal police>> gives prominence to the fact that Daphne Caruana Galizia’s family handed two laptops and three hard drives used by Daphne Caruana Galizia before her death to the German federal police on April 27th. On its back page The Times carries a Talking point by former Minister Censu Galea entitled <<Principles remain unchanged>> . In this article the former Minister writes that “While I believe politics should not be dirty, it has become much easier to throw mud at those involved in politics.” He adds “There are some people in politics who make it their mission to dirty politics and politicians”. He adds that no one, including politicians should abuse their rights, especially that of freedom of expression.

The Malta Independent reports that <<Former PM Gonzi not willing to comment on NAO hospital report, at least not until he reads it>>. In the report we read that the former PM, was contacted by the newspaper for his reaction to the damning report.

In-Nazzjon dedicates its front page to the PN unanimous vote against the proposed amendments to the Embryo Protection act which will result in changes in the IVF bill. <<Il-PN unanimu favur il-ħajja>> refers to the PN vote which reflects a ‘consistent position’ and which reaffirms its position to protect the voiceless. The backpage refers to a story about a Maltese chef James Rizzo who went to the UK for an international work experience through which he met celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.

L-Orizzont’s front page carries three additional stories to the one of the bomb in Gharghur. <<Kommessi li nkomplu nsaħħu l-prodott turistiku Malti>> refers to comments by Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi following the recent positive NSO statistics about tourism in Malta. The second story refers to the annual report issued by the European Commission on its economic performance. <<L-esklużjoni soċjali u l-faqar niżlu għall-livelli tal-2008>> refer to the positive elements mentioned in the European Commission’s report. The third report quotes the Speaker of the House stating that it might be the time to impose a dress code in Parliament following comments on the too much ‘casual’ outfit that MP Godfrey Farrugia wore in Parliament. The back-page story of the newspaper refers to the possible delays in the US-North Korea summit.

The Malta Business Weekly reports that a <<Maltese private bank plans to set up Dublin office>>. The report refers to a Maltese private bank owned by Austrian savings bank Sparkasse Schwaz which is planning to set up an office in Dublin to provide services to the international funds industry. In a second story entitled <<Maricann enters into a non-binding LOI to acquire a licence in Malta>> refers to a story where Maricann Group has announced that it has entered into a non-binding LOI to acquire 100% of the issued and outstanding shares of Medican Holdings Ltd of Malta which is one of the six companies approved to recieve a licence to import, extract, manufacture finished dose products, and distribute cannabis for medical purposes within Malta and the EU.
