Seven Maltese athletes are representing the country at the 2026 European Athletics Off-Road Running Championships, taking place this weekend in Kamnik, Slovenia, marking one of the most competitive editions of the event to date.
The championships have attracted a record 593 athletes from 33 countries, competing across a demanding programme of uphill, up-and-down mountain races, and trail running events set against the backdrop of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. The challenging terrain is expected to test endurance, strength, and technical running ability across all categories.
Malta’s team features a strong mix of experienced and emerging athletes. In the senior categories, Tara Abdilla, Giselle Camilleri, and Tommy Wallbank will compete in the uphill races, while Ryan Farrugia will take on the demanding 52.7km trail race with 2,648 metres of elevation gain. Aidan Tanti and Isaac Attard will also represent Malta in the trail events.
In the under-20 category, Iris Merle Camilleri will compete in both the uphill and up-and-down races, covering a 5.7km course with significant elevation change.
