Maltese Editors’ Perspectives

Four papers in print today, with local Editors sharing their thoughts on hunting, affordable housing, poverty and, inevitably, the coronavirus pandemic.

The Times of Malta tackles the issue of hunting once again, arguing that the pitting of hunters and environmentalists against one another is undermining the quality of co-existence that should lie at the heart of ecological sustainability. The Editor argues that if hunters are to continue to be present in the Maltese countryside, then alongside stronger self-regulation and effective policing, respectful dialogue between hunters and activists must become a reality.

The Independent appeals to the wider community not to abuse of the easing of restrictions which come into force today. If the the number of cases spikes again, then it is likely that strict measures will need to be imposed. Breaking the regulations will harm society, insists the Editor. The Editorial argues that the health authorities have done a good job in tackling the virus, so the public should make their lives easier by abiding by their rules and conditions.

L-Orizzont focuses its leading op-ed on recent efforts to support persons wanting to become owners of their home, including the provision of social units, reduced tax for first time buyers and measures in favour of affordable housing, including equity sharing.

In-Nazzjon highlights the plight of the poor – a societal grouping which has been short-changed with the pandemic, having suffered most of the brunt. The Editor notes that this situation is becoming increasingly more acute in Malta, with Foodbanks having to support at least 2,000 families. The Editor calls on Government to provide tangible support for the most vulnerable persons among us.
