Maltese Editors’ Perspectives

Today’s Editorials tackle different shades of the COVID-19 debate, from the environmental to the economic impact as well as health repercussions of current attitudes towards the virus.

The Times of Malta places its focus today on environmental concerns, noting how COVID-19 has created an unprecedented opportunity for communities all over the world to experience cleaner air, returning wildlife and a lifestyle that is less carbon-intensive. Over the past weeks there have been reports about a recorded improvement in Maltese air quality, the return of dolphins to the Malta channel, and expressions of relief as towns and cities across the islands enjoyed reduced traffic. The Editor reminds us that Malta is essentially one sprawling urban zone and argues that investing in greener uses for precious and limited space must be top of the national agenda.

The Independent raises questions on what it described as contradictions in the relaxation of COVID-19 related measures. It notes, for example, how contact sport is still prohibited, while at the same time the same team members can mingle together in crowded bars or hotspots, referring to episodes seen in Paceville this weekend. The Editor wonders why people who go to supermarkets and other outlets must still wear a mask to protect themselves and others, but then masses of people gathered on beaches without the need to wear any protection.

In-Nazzjon considers the recent surge in hate speech particularly aired on social media. The Editor argues that our country does not deserve this type of hatred and hopes to see stronger action by the Prime Minister and responsible authorities to confront this situation.

L-Orizzont is the only editorial to discuss the economic regeneration plan announced yesterday evening by Government. The Editor describes it as the right tonic to spur the Maltese economy back into life after the challenges of the previous months, delivering, through support to businesses and families a better tomorrow.
